Defensive Ballistics: Science Over Myth

Defensive ballistics sits at the intersection of physics, physiology, and practicality. Selecting a defensive ammunition requires cutting through decades of myth, anecdote, and marketing claims to find evidence-based answers about what actually stops a lethal threat. The science is clear — no handgun is guaranteed to be immediately incapacitating, and selection should focus on controllable, accurately delivered shots with appropriate penetration and expansion.

The FBI Minimum Standard

Following the 1986 Miami FBI shootout, the FBI conducted extensive research into handgun terminal performance and established the FBI Protocol — the gold standard for defensive ammunition evaluation. The critical finding: 12-18 inches of penetration in calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin, after passage through standard barriers, with expansion as secondary criterion. Bullets that fail to penetrate adequately cannot reliably disrupt the structures needed to stop a threat.

Physiological Stopping Mechanisms

There are only two reliable mechanisms for rapid incapacitation from gunshot wounds: (1) Disruption of the central nervous system (brain or upper spinal cord), and (2) Rapid hemorrhagic shock from damage to major blood vessels or solid organs causing catastrophic blood pressure loss. All other effects (pain, psychological shock, limb wounds) are unreliable stoppers and cannot be counted upon in a defensive scenario.

Caliber Selection for Defense

Modern testing has largely narrowed the performance gap between major defensive calibers. Quality 9mm +P hollow points from major manufacturers rival the terminal performance of .40 S&W and .45 ACP while offering lower recoil, higher magazine capacity, and reduced shooter fatigue. The FBI switched back to 9mm in 2015 specifically because of advances in defensive ammunition technology combined with these practical advantages.

Barrier Blind Performance

Defensive rounds must often penetrate barriers before reaching a threat — car doors, walls, clothing, and glass all change a bullet’s behavior. Heavy clothing can plug hollow point cavities and prevent expansion. Auto glass causes dramatic bullet deflection and deformation. The best defensive ammunition balances reliable expansion in gelatin with consistent penetration after defeating common barriers.

Shot Placement Primacy

All the terminal ballistics science in the world is secondary to accurate shot placement. A marginally performing round in the right anatomical location will outperform a premium round missing the CNS or major vessels. The best defensive caliber is one that the shooter can fire most accurately and rapidly under stress, making training and practice the most important defensive investment of all.
